The Ultimate DIY Face Mask for Acne and Scars

Acne affects approximately 50 million Americans each year. Though not a life-threatening problem it does affect the self-esteem of young people. While somewhat acceptable in teens because of hormone imbalances and considered a normal part of growing up, it is a completely crushing when acne continues into the 20‘s and 30‘s. Adults and teens with acne even avoid being seen in public because of it. Antibiotics and OTC creams like benzoyl peroxide, which might work for a while, tend to cause dryness and irritation to the delicate skin of the face. For some people though these medications do not work on their acne. So then not only are you left with acne, but also dry, red and irritated skin.

Face-Mask

The best way to fix acne problems once and for all is through diet and face masks made with pure and organic ingredients. The advantage of using diet to heal acne is you give your body what it needs to help fight acne from the inside, while the face masks help your skin heal gently from the outside without the dryness and irritation that creams like benzoyl peroxide create. Not only is the acne healed but these face masks also help prevent scars or help fade old scars and keep the skin soft and supple.

Here’s the recipe for a face mask that gently heals acne and also prevents scarring. Even old acne scars will fade if this mask is used regularly. Expect to see results in 4-6 weeks.

2 teaspoons organic, raw honey

1/2 teaspoon organic cinnamon powder

1/4 teaspoon organic nutmeg powder

1/4 teaspoon organic turmeric powder

2-3 drops rosehip, avocado or any preferred oilNow let’s look at the benefits and the reason why each of these ingredients is used and how it helps your skin heal acne.

Honey

honey

Honey removes excess oil from acne prone skin and leaves it smooth and moisturized. The benefit of this is that it works on both dry and oily skin. Contrary to what we believe acne can occur in people with both oily as well as dry skins. Using honey benefits you no matter what type of skin you have. If you have combination skin, honey balances it out nicely by moisturizing the dry areas and absorbing extra oil from the oily areas. Honey is also antiseptic which helps as it kills the acne causing bacteria. Honey also has anti-inflammatory properties which reduce the swelling and redness caused by acne. The stickiness of honey helps clean out the pores by pulling out any dirt or blocks. Remember to use raw and organic honey only.

Cinnamon

Cinnamon has anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties which are again very helpful in treating acne. It also improves blood and oxygen circulation, which helps in unclogging pores and opening them. Clogged pores in one of the main reasons why acne occurs. Cinnamon is also an antioxidant which protects the skin from toxins or harmful substances trapped in the skin pores by the accumulation of dirt. If your skin does not have active acne then while washing off the mask, you can use the cinnamon in the mask to gently provide an exfoliating effect thereby removing dead skin cells, which will make your skin look much better.

Nutmeg

Nutmeg has antiviral and antibacterial properties which help with clogged pores and removing excess oil from the face. It also has antiseptic which helps fight acne. Nutmeg also has astringent properties which is great news for anyone with acne as it helps close open pores. It has helped heal acne scars.

Turmeric

Turmeric has been used for centuries in Indian medicine. It is also used a lot in Indian beauty treatments. Turmeric has antibacterial and antifungal properties which means it kills the bacteria that cause breakouts. It also has anti-inflammatory properties which helps in reducing the swelling and redness that comes when you have acne. Turmeric is also an antioxidant which helps remove free radicals which in turn prevents future breakouts. The only problem with turmeric is that it stains anything it comes in contact with, including your skin. The good thing about using it along with honey is that viscous and thick nature of honey prevents staining. It is better to wear old clothes and stay away from light colored furniture when handling turmeric. If your hands or nails do get stained yellow with turmeric a simple sugar scrub will get rid of it. Try and get your hands on organic turmeric not the one available for cooking purposes in Indian stores. Organic turmeric has more of an orange hue than a yellow one.

Rosehip Oil

Rosehip-Oil

Rosehip oil has a high fatty acid content which helps keeps the skin moisturized and helps heal acne and reduce scars. Fatty acids also unclog pores so that acne is reduced. Rosehip oil contains essential fatty acids, Vitamin A, Vitamin C and Vitamin E. The fatty acids helps moisturize the skin and speeds up the healing of scars left behind by acne. The Vitamin C in the oil is great for acne and also helps fade old acne scars. If you do not have Rosehip oil you can use Avocado oil or any other oil you want. If you want you can also skip the oil, but the oil will help moisturize your skin without leaving it oily.

This mask should be used every day for good results. It can be made and any leftovers can be kept for the next 2-3 days. Apply the mask and leave it for half an hour. If you do not have active acne you can use the mask as a gentle scrub while washing it off. Gently move the cinnamon and nutmeg granules in the mask around on your face, avoiding areas which have acne, so that dead skin is exfoliated. You can apply a moisturizer after washing your face.
